Saturday Afternoon Competition

Picture
Glenburn offers organised competition on a Saturday afternoon for players over 18 years of age (younger players have their own competition in the mornings).

The prime reason for playing competition is still to have fun but it also gives you the opportunity to improve your game by playing more often against players of similar standard!

There are 2 seasons of competition each year -
  • Summer - runs from October to February with breaks for school holidays, public holidays and Christmas/January
  • Winter - runs from April to September with breaks for school holidays and public holidays

Intermediate to Advanced standards are catered for and you will be placed in a team of players at a similar standard to yours - Glenburn typically enters 6-7 teams each season at varying standards.

How does it work?
The Waverley District Tennis Association schedules matches each Saturday (excluding long weekends and school holidays) against other tennis clubs in the area. At the start of each season you are given a list of each tennis club your team you’ll be playing against and a roster is drawn up which lists who is playing from your team each week.

There are usually two types of formats:
Mixed Rubbers

In this format, 4 team members (2 men, 2 women) play per week - generally you will be placed in a team of 6 which means you'll need to be available each Saturday for 2 out of every 3 weeks. In an afternoon you will play a men’s or women’s rubber (best of 3 sets) and a mixed set/rubber.
Open Singles/Doubles

This format requires a minimum of 2 people in a team but usually each team would have 3 members. In an afternoon you would play a singles rubber (best of 3 sets) and a doubles rubber (also best of 3 sets). This format is popular amongst younger players.

Play starts each Saturday at 1pm and generally finishes around 4:30pm - depending on how long your matches last.

What does it cost?
$20.00 per season to cover entry fee and ball money (new tennis balls are provided for each match).

How do I get involved?
Teams and entries are organised by Leah Dennis. Entries are generally done 2 months before the start of each season – entry forms will be emailed out to everyone in the club.

If you miss the entry deadline you can still fill in for teams when they need players so please let us know if you’re interested.
